RISING AWARNESS THROUGH THE POWER OF FILM
Films certainly have the power to make an impact in a way other mediums cannot, and enable us to put a spotlight on, recognise and understand complex issues. On 18th September, IIT held a private film screening at The Wellington hotel by Blue Orchid of Even When I Fall to raise awareness and to increase the understanding of this horrific global crime; human trafficking.
Based on a true story, Even When I Fall follows Sheetal and Saraswoti who met as teenagers in a Kathmandu refuge, survivors of child trafficking to corrupt Indian circuses, brought back across the border to Nepal, which they barely remember. They confront the families that sold them, seek acceptance within their own country and begin to build a future. They struggle against the odds, without education but they were left with a secret weapon by their captors - their breath-taking skills as circus artists. With eleven other young trafficking survivors, they form Circus Kathmandu, Nepal’s only circus. A truly inspiring journey.
Following the screening of this inspirational yet insightful film, attendees we joined by the film’s co-director, Kate McLarnon, the operations director of Circus Kathmandu, Anna Strickland and photojournalist and filmmaker, Hazel Thompson for an engaging panel discussion.
Thank you to everyone who participated and for your philanthropic enthusiasm towards IIT and Circus Kathmandu’s work.
